About Us

The Metro Group has been one of Long Island’s leading builders since our founding in 1958 by Saul Muchnick.

The Metro Group is a real estate development team.  We take projects from raw land, obtain the necessary approvals, and continue until the final customer moves into their home, office or apartment.  We handle planning and development, design, site work, construction, sales, renting, financing, property management and customer relations.

Since Saul’s first homes built in Brooklyn in 1958, we have built approximately 1,000 homes in addition to numerous apartment complexes, commercial buildings, synagogues, and a large nursing home.

Saul’s wife, Dorothy, joined the firm in 1970. She has lead the design and decorating departments of the firm to this day.

We have received numerous awards and professional recognition.  Foremost among them, we won the 1986 “Golden Archi” for best residence of the year, given by the Long Island Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for a 6,600 square foot home we built in Sands Point.

In addition, two of our developments, both waterfront projects (in Oakdale and East Patchogue), received significant praise from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation for our wetlands mitigation, as we were the first developer on Long Island to have completed shoreline restoration of this type.  This work was highlighted in a display in the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.

Saul’s son, Robert, joined the firm in 1988 and worked with him for 28 years until Saul’s passing in 2016.

Saul’s wisdom and guidance still inspires Robert as he leads the Metro Group into the future.

Giving Back

Saul, Dorothy and Robert believe that they have been blessed in this lifetime and that those similarly blessed should give back to their communities in some fashion.

This is why Saul set up the Muchnick Family Foundation, to use as a vehicle to help others. In particular, Saul liked to focus on strengthening organizations that fought cancer, the disease that took both of his beloved parents, Max and Rachel.

As a young man, Saul saw his uncle Arthur Muchnick build the Ahavath Yisrael synagogue on Avenue K in Brooklyn (now called “Young Israel of Avenue K”) and he took this lesson to heart.

As such, The Metro Group has built, expanded or renovated numerous synagogues for no charge. Among these are Temple Beth Israel of Port Washington, Mid-Suffolk Chabad of Commack, Manetto Hill Jewish Center of Plainview, Temple Beth El of Patchogue, and Chabad – Young Israel of Patchogue.

Robert has also volunteered his time for many years to numerous Israeli causes and charities, among them Americans For a Safe Israel and The Jewish Leadership Movement.
